The Bishop responded with an affirmation of our presence and ministry in the diocese and amazement at the variety of the ministries of the sisters. He then opened the floor to comments and questions. Issues raised by the sisters included: promotion of vocations to religious communities in our diocese; Council of Religious as a collegial body serving as a consulting body to the Bishop; care and concern for ministry to the “poor schools” of the diocese: prison ministry: Hispanic/Latino Ministry (especially in ministering with and among them rather than expecting them to join us); African American ministry; the number of theologically educated lay people in our diocese willing and able to assume leadership in our church; ministry on college campuses; ministry in military base areas; parish education programs; the many “rural” areas of church in our diocese; lack of a lay voice due to the demise of the DPC; need to find a way to make use of the skills and abilities of the retired members of our churches. Sr. Margaret also said that the Pastoral Administrators had a very positive and affirming meeting with the Bishop. F. Responsibilities for Jubilee 2007…. The next meeting will be held on Wed., Nov. 29th from 1-3 with Bishop Burbidge; new members of council will be invited to join us for this meeting. Lunch will be available at 12:30 I. Vocations … from Sr. Joanna Walsh Just to let you know that I have been invited to be on the Young Adult Encounter team for the first weekend of November. Sr. Vero (Holy Cross) from Raleigh will also be on the team. Perhaps this will finally be a chance for us to explore how sisters might be involved without having to be present for the whole weekend! This time we DO have to be present for the whole thing, but I want to meet the leaders and explain to them the ministry commitments of women religious and ask if they can work with us around timing. |
